Ontario eavestrough & water management — key facts

Improper drainage is among the top causes of residential foundation damage in Canada — directly tied to failing or absent eavestrough systems.
CMHC, Homeowner’s Guide to Water Management
A typical Ontario home has 100–150 linear feet of eavestrough — replacing the full system typically costs $1,500–$4,500.
Industry standard; MKT project data 2024
Eavestroughs should be cleaned at minimum twice a year — spring and fall — with tree-surrounded homes needing 3–4 cleanings annually.

Eavestrough material comparison

MaterialLifespanCost / linear ftNotes
Aluminum (seamless)20–30 years$10–$18Most popular — no joints to fail
Vinyl10–15 years$6–$12Budget option; cold-weather brittleness risk
Galvanized steel20–30 years$12–$20Rust risk at cut ends
Copper50+ years$35–$55Premium / heritage properties

Seamless aluminum is the specification we recommend for virtually all Ontario homes — durability, no-joint design and a cost-performance ratio nothing else matches at scale.

Warning signs to watch for

  • Water pooling at the foundation or overflowing during rain — blocked or undersized system
  • Rust stains, cracks or separated seams on existing eavestroughs
  • Soft, discoloured or visibly rotting fascia boards behind the eavestroughs
  • Holes, staining or pest damage on soffits
  • Ice-dam formation at eaves — often signals blocked or undersized soffits
  • Interior water staining on ceilings or walls near exterior walls

Our services

Seamless eavestrough installation

Custom-fabricated on-site to your home’s exact roofline — eliminating every seam that could fail. Properly sized and sloped for Ontario’s spring melt and heavy rain.

Soffit & fascia replacement

Aluminum, vinyl and wood — restoring the structural support for eavestroughs and the attic ventilation that prevents moisture buildup and ice damming.

Downspout installation & extension

Downspouts must direct water at least 600 mm from the foundation per the OBC; we recommend 1.5–2 m for optimal protection, and size and position them correctly.

Eavestrough repair

Section replacement, re-sealing joints and re-sloping misaligned channels — restoring full function at a fraction of replacement cost.

Frequently asked questions

What is a seamless eavestrough and why is it better?

Seamless eavestroughs are fabricated from a single piece of aluminum to your roofline’s exact length — eliminating seams, the most common failure and leak point in sectional systems. They last longer, look cleaner and need less maintenance.

How do I know if my fascia needs replacing?

Soft spots when pressed, visible discolouration or rot, and eavestroughs pulling away from the roofline are the primary signs. Fascia must be replaced before any eavestrough work — the eavestrough attaches directly to it.

How often should eavestroughs be cleaned in Ontario?

At minimum twice yearly: late spring after bud-drop and late fall after leaves. Homes with heavy tree coverage should add a third cleaning in early fall.

Can blocked soffits cause ice dams?

Yes. Soffits supply the cold airflow that keeps attic temperatures balanced in winter. Blocked soffits reduce that airflow, letting attic heat warm the roof deck and trigger the freeze-thaw cycle at the eaves that creates ice dams.
